Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Wyatt has today expressed his deepest sorrow at the news of the passing of Mrs Lawford-Wolf, a Gooniyandi woman from the Kimberley's Fitzroy Valley.

Mrs Lawford-Wolf rose from humble beginnings, growing up in the Wankatjunka community at Christmas Creek Station near Fitzroy Crossing, to become a highly respected actor and known to an international audience.

Her contribution to the performing arts in film, television and theatre in both Western Australia and nationally has been outstanding. Her warm and bubbly character epitomised the wonderful, good-natured spirit and resilience of so many Aboriginal people.

She was also a community leader and advocate for the rights and interests of her own mob as well as Aboriginal people throughout Australia.  Apart from her theatrical work, Mrs Lawford-Wolf has recently worked at the Broome High School mentoring young Aboriginal people to help them reach their potential.
